Aromatherapy

What is aromatherapy?

The use of essential oils (which are extracted from herbs, flowers, resin, woods, and roots) in body and skin care treatments is known as aromatherapy. Aromatherapy can be defined as the art and science of utilizing these naturally extracted aromatic essences to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. It is an art and science which seeks to explore the physiological, psychological and spiritual realm of the individual's response to aromatic extracts as well as to observe and enhance the individual's innate healing process. Each of the oils has its own unique characteristics and benefits.

I incorporate Aromatherapy into my practice by mixing essential oils in with the massage oils, in consultation with the client.

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus or Eucalyptus radiata):  Helpful in treating respiratory problems, such as coughs, colds, and asthma, it is used in many vapor rubs. It has analgesic properties and can help to relieve muscle tension.  It is generally thought of as energizing, and  is thought to improve the complexion.

Lemon (Citrus limon):  Invigorating, refreshing, and very uplifting, yet relaxing.  Its alleged medicinal actions include use as an antioxidant and to boost the immune system.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia):  A natural anti fungal oil, it has been used to aid in treating various infections, and is popularly thought of to have beneficial skin properties, including the treatment of acne.

Roman Chamomile (Anthemus nobilis):  Very relaxing, and may help with sleeplessness and anxiety. Also good for muscle aches and tension.  It has been touted as a digestive stimulant and has been used as an adjunct to assist in treating constipation.
